Attendance up nearly 50% at City libraries’ career expos

Career expos at City libraries during the first half of the year drew a record turnout of 6 355 young people. This is nearly double the number compared to 2025 when 4 500 attended career expos.

The number of expos hosted by libraries also increased from 13 in 2025 to 18 this year.

The event with the highest attendance was the Wynberg, Southfield and Plumstead Libraries integrated expo where 2 997 young people attended and the Rylands Library expo held at Rylands High School attracted 1 070 youth.

‘The turnout at the expos has been phenomenal and it is inspiring to see so many driven young people make use of the events to learn about careers and opportunities available to them. It is a chance to learn about your chosen career path, or cement your goals and the road that leads there. For many who are undecided about what to do, it’s an opportunity to gather information to make more informed decisions,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

Stakeholders include high schools, a number of City departments, a wide range of tertiary institutions, companies and non-profit organisations, such as the National Sea Rescue Institute, Iziko Museums and the Bee Keepers Association South Africa.
